False Doctrine
False doctrine leads men away from the doctrine of God. All true doctrine comes from God. God has instituted a plan for the salvation of his creations. For man "shall live by every word that proceedeth forth from the mouth of God" (D&C 84:44). All true prophets and servants of God have taught this. Even "Moses plainly taught to the children of Israel in the wilderness, and sought diligently to sanctify his people that they might behold the face of God" (D&C 84:23).
False doctrines are not true and come from "the devil, who is the father of all lies" (2 Nephi 2:18). The apostle Paul warned against those that have "changed the truth of God into a lie" (Romans 1:25). Disciples of Christ are to, "take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them" (Acts 20:28-30).
Concerning the fulness of the gospel of Christ of which the apostle Paul possessed and of which The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints now possesses, the apostle Paul taught, "If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. For do I now please men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ" (Galatians 1:9-12).
Paul continues this concern in his letters to Timothy and warns by revelation of the Spirit that even in the last days, "some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth" (1 Tim. 4:1-3).
Peter taught, "even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in [to the church] damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction" (2 Peter 2:1). In the last days John the revelator seen the Babylonian system that would be established speaking great things to the world even to the point of blaspheming God and His Christ who He sent into the world, "and he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven" (Rev. 13:6).
The restoration of the fulness of the gospel of Christ was needed, because some of the true doctrines of Christ were removed from the scriptures, "for behold, they have taken away from the gospel of the Lamb many parts which are plain and most precious; and also many covenants of the Lord have they taken away" (1 Nephi 13:26). For they have done this to "pervert the right ways of the Lord" (1 Nephi 13:27). God has brought forth the Book of Mormon in the last days to "the confounding of false doctrines and laying down contentions, and establishing peace among the fruit of thy loins, and bringing them to the knowledge of their fathers in the latter days, and also to the knowledge of my covenants, saith the Lord" (2 Nephi 3:12).
For this is the day, the last days, wherein "there are many spirits which are false spirits, which have gone forth in the earth, deceiving the world" (D&C 50:2). For those who are influenced by those spirits will say, "Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die; and it shall be well with us. And there shall also be many which shall say: Eat, drink, and be merry; nevertheless, fear God - he will justify in committing a little sin; yea, lie a little, take the advantage of one because of his words, dig a pit for thy neighbor; there is no harm in this; and do all these things, for tomorrow we die; and if it so be that we are guilty, God will beat us with a few stripes, and at last we shall be saved in the kingdom of God. Yea, and there shall be many which shall teach after this manner, false and vain and foolish doctrines, and shall be puffed up in their hearts, and shall seek deep to hide their counsels from the Lord; and their works shall be in the dark" (2 Nephi 28:7-9).
Many people are "blinded by the subtle craftiness of men, whereby they lie in wait to deceive" (D&C 123:12). For "that which doth not edify is not of God, and is darkness" (D&C 50:23). For as the Lord has warned through Nephi, "all those who preach false doctrines...wo, wo, wo be unto them, saith the Lord God Almighty, for they shall be thrust down to hell" (2 Nephi 28:15).
